I have been considering the situation regarding the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan recently. The thought that came my way was:
What if North and South Korea both petitioned the USA to become territories of the United States with the thought in mind of becoming states after creating constitutions palatable to the U.S. Congress and the president?
China would probably be irritated as would also be Russia as that would put a USA entity on their respective doorsteps.
What if Taiwan petitioned the USA to become a state of the United States?
The Chinese would likely consider it an act of appropriation and possibly an act of war. Never mind they are doing the same thing with the islands in the South China Sea. Taiwan has long been a protectorate of the United States, both militarily and politically. China has never liked the relationship between Taiwan and the USA and has often threatened Taiwan with invasion. Taiwan is not connected to continental China except through heritage.
These thing will probably never happen, but it gives one pause to think about it.
